Techniques for Training your Attention
This blog series has been exploring power of the untapped mind, for healing and success. Everything is energy…the more we can manage our energy, the closer we will be to our own personal goals and happiness. Following are some more insights and techniques from B. Allan Wallace’s book (reference at bottom)
Mindfulness of breathing can help disengage the thoughts that flood the mind, making it a valuable tool for everything from relaxation and sleep, to overcoming ADHD and greater personal success.
- Physicians don’t heal…they do what they can to allow the body to heal itself
- Mindfulness of breathing…breathe in & out with as little interference as possible.
- The body knows best how to breathe…trust your body…
[That means we may have to overcome the childhood teaching to keep your abdomen small…research has shown that we spend 80% of your time chest breathing, which stimulates the solar plexus nerve bundle, which increases pulse & blood pressure. We may have to re-train ourselves in abdominal breathing…which we do while sleeping, allowing our bodies to relax and healing.]
- Rather than adopting any special breathing technique, you simply stop disturbing your respirations with disruptive thoughts and emotions. Healthy flow of breath is restored naturally.
Experiment: Notice your breath. On a 3×5 card, track your breaths per minute and your breathing patterns when you’re angry, sad, elated or surprised, when you are working hard, concentrating hard, or in a traffic jam. Compare the breathing patterns to when you relaxing with music or watching the sun set.
