Take a One-Minute Breathing Space
Switch out of auto-pilot and take a moment to CHOOSE your response, instead of reacting to a situation. One minute, that’s all it takes to break out of the fight-or-flight mode and THINK about what you really want to do.
This is a great technique for kids and ourselves.
S – Stop
When something happens that demands your attention or threatens you…STOP.
T – Take a breath
Focus breathing in & out through your nose (if you can) and into the abdomen.
This technique is proven to reduce stress as it mimics the very relaxed breathing of sleep. Stress narrows your ability to think outside the box, so reducing your stress is paramount to making good choices.
O – Observe
What is really happening? … your thoughts, emotions, body reactions? STOP the auto-pilot.
P – Proceed
ACT…from a point of calmness, CHOOSING your action, instead of merely REACTING to a situation…letting someone else “pull your strings”…like a puppet. Proceed with awareness and kindness…for you and others.
