Techniques for Training your Attention
COGNITIVE DEFICIT DISORDER – no better way to kill time… where the mind goes absent without leave. We wake up after the fact, not having a clue what someone is saying to us, or the miles we have just driven. …
Cognitive hyperactivity disorder – projections that aren’t really there. Thought we heard or say something. Or misperceive what was said or done, imposing our own interpretation on it. Leading to unnecessary suffering.
By taking 60 seconds, or even 15 seconds out of our day to balance the attention by quietly focusing on the breath…we can balance these cognitive imbalances.
Or, we could apply this focus to other sensations, visual, olfactory, auditory, tactile, gustatory… as with mindful eating. So do this for a meal, or a snack break. Or go outside and listen to the birds or the wind.
Recognize nuances of these sensations without labels, likes or dislikes. Just observe. Be totally present. Noting how they change from moment to moment.
Research is finding that multitasking is not efficient. It’s as if we have a finite quantity of attention….”like a finite volume of water flowing down a gorge—and as we direct it into smaller tributaries of interest, there’s less attention available for each channel.”
And since multitasking “is necessary at times…try to do so as mindfully as possible.”
